Character Name: The Horde {Kevin Wendell Crumb. et al.}
Series: Eastrail 177 Trilogy (UNBREAKABLE, SPLIT, GLASS)
Character History: Wiki Link
Character Canon Point: Between the events of SPLIT and GLASS
CRAU: Once he became a denizen of New Dodge, Kevin began to do significantly better--and yes, you read that right. In addition to the Others finding a way to flourish, Kevin began to come out for small stretches of his own accord, sharing the Light now and again as his System came together in the single goal of helping him recover.
As for the unity of the System, New Dodge gave them a quiet place to sort themselves out. With real regret for his actions and too weighed down by trauma, Dennis warily accepted the first chance Barry gave him to talk, and the pair have reached an understanding: once again a dedicated protector, Dennis is allowed in the light, and even accepts help from the Others to control their urges. Patricia is still distant, but slowly coming around--and even the Beast has made strides, seeing a place for them among the denizens of New Dodge...an entire host of Broken souls to shepherd.
Unity, however, was not all the System gained in New Dodge. Gradually, the Others began to find places for themselves in the community, holding various jobs and even forming interpersonal relationships. Jade found female friends her own age, Hedwig found acceptance with other children close to his age, and Barry found a co-designer to work with in town. Two of the alters (Barry and Dennis) were even in a romantic relationship with the same girl, while some of the Others were growing closer to their new partner in crime.
Personality: Kevin Crumb suffers from DID, and as a result has twenty four distinct personalities living within him, each an individual in their own right. To that end, in the interests of making this application readable, I'll offer a few lines on the most prominent alters, including Kevin himself:
KEVIN: Kevin is a frightened and damaged young man. Sensitive, haunted, and plagued by guilt, he is so broken by what he has endured that he has no idea how truly strong he is. At the end of SPLIT, realizing his alters have done the unspeakable, he does not hesitate to ask the young woman his alters kidnapped to kill him to prevent any further killing. However, in New Dodge, Kevin has grown stronger, choosing to come out of his own free will more than once thanks to the friendship of Elle Byers (aka Eleven from Stranger Things), and begin to form relationships of his own in the way of friendships, and a growing connection to Barry and Dennis's girlfriend, Courtney.
BARRY: an extroverted leader, Barry is the social face of the System. A charismatic fashion plate, Barry is a natural born mediator with an even temperament, and until recently has exuded enough control to solely relegate which alters get the Light, and when. Now, thanks to the influence of New Dodge and their new relationships, Barry and Dennis share that burden, with a small measure of help from both Samuel and Orwell to keep the younger alters in line.
ORWELL: an introverted academic, Orwell is a historian with poor social skills, often discussing situations and feelings by drawing parallels to significant battles, events, and figures in world history to make himself understood. Despite his awkwardness, however, he's a pleasant individual with voracious curiosity and sees knowledge as something beautiful to be shared. In New Dodge, his social skills were improving slightly, by way of a burgeoning friendship and personal infatuation with Courtney, as well as associating with local scholars and magic practitioners willing to share their knowledge with him.
HEDWIG: a nine year old boy, Hedwig is a rambunctious young man not quite at the cusp of puberty, noticing girls but not quite sure why. He is a fairly normal, well adjusted child often in the care of the other alters: he loves comic books, he likes rap music, and he's as flighty as he is friendly. In New Dodge, he found more of the normalcy and stability children often need, but given the nature of the System's condition, he isn't capable of experiencing much in the way of growth.
PATRICIA: dominant among Kevin's female alters, Patricia was once a protector, but has since become a persecutor. Composed, cool, and proper, her discipline and cunning protected Kevin from his OCD mother as a child, and served as the maternal figure Kevin never had when he was a child. She is also a woman of deep faith, and it is this faith that led to her change in role: Patricia worships the 24th of Kevin's personalities, an inhuman alter called the Beast that she believes is a god that will ignite a sort of apocalypse to cleanse humanity of its weakness. Previously, she helped to usurp Barry's control of the System, and was ruthless in combating all who opposed the Beast, but in New Dodge she is in the process of mending fences. Losing an ally in Dennis, the new power dynamic in the System has resulted in some of the alters extending tenuous hands of friendship, a willingness to tolerate her presence, and even in some cases forgive her her transgressions because she is still wholly focused on protecting Kevin.
DENNIS: the first born of the alters, Dennis has served as the System's primary protector for many years, but has cracked under the pressure of the severity of the abuse he suffered in Kevin's stead. As a result, Dennis developed OCD, and a belief in the depravity of his own natural sexual urges. Ruthless repression resulted in an unhealthy predilection for watching post-pubescent teenage girls dance naked, and an unhealthy appetite for sex that left him a volatile and unpredictable presence. This left Barry with no choice to ban him from the Light, which left a gaping void in the System. For all his deviancy, Dennis has always been something of a shining beacon within the System: selfless to his detriment, loyal, focused, disciplined, and generous. He took the sole welfare of the System upon himself, and is the primary trauma holder for Kevin. His alliance with Patricia and the Beast was borne of a desire to find rest, to hand the role of protector over to someone else, but in the aftermath of the Beast's destruction, Dennis was overcome with remorse. In New Dodge, Dennis has worked through that, restoring his broken relationship with Barry and discovering that he could have healthy relationships with the likes of Elle Byers and Courtney Marteniz. He still struggles with his part in the Beast's killings, but has shifted his laser focus to atoning for his sins.
JADE: a seventeen year old girl with a foul mouth and a case of 'boy crazy.' Jade is fairly normal, save that she suffers diabetes (a condition that physically afflicts Kevin only when she has the Light), but struggles to have a normal life given her medical condition, and that she inhabits the body of a thirtysomething year old man. Bubbly, highly opinionated, and nurturing, she's everyone's favorite sister, big or little, and fights hard for Kevin when the Horde takes control. In New Dodge, she's found acceptance for who and what she is, and freedom to live the life she's always wanted, which has improved her disposition a great deal...she's even talked some of her friends into trying to convince Dennis to let her wear nail polish.
THE BEAST: an inhuman alter developed during Kevin's ten year employment at the Philadelphia Zoo, the Beast is a primitive creature more animal than man in terms of his psychology. He can think and reason, to a degree, and believes himself to be a god--a fact which has grim support in terms of his abilities. He has a savage temper, violent tendencies, but true to that animal nature he is capable of blind loyalty to those he believes are the Broken, or those who have suffered a great deal of any sort of pain in life. The Impure, or those who have not suffered, are not safe from his bloodlust, but he steadfastly refuses to harm the Broken--save for those who pose a threat to Kevin. Due to his primitive nature, the Beast saw very little growth in New Dodge, save that he found a means to hunt, a community in a town populated by those who have suffered--and sees the partner some members of the System have garnered in Courtney as a potential mate.
Abilities: All of the alters have their own sets of skills and weaknesses, from ability (Orwell is an intellectual, Barry a skilled artist, Luke a skilled gardener) to physical (Jade has diabetes, Orwell and Dennis are nearsighted, Felida can't speak English) and back again. However, the Beast alone possesses supernatural powers, namely the following:
- impenetrable skin
- superhuman strength
- superhuman speed & reflexes
- climbing (he is capable of scaling any flat surface without equipment, fingers and toes clinging to the barest imperfections in order to support himself)
- enhanced senses (hearing, sight, taste, touch, smell)
Six Items:
- Hedwig's CD player/radio
- Barry's design portfolio
- Jade's favorite pink hoodie
- Dennis's yellow rag
- Orwell's favorite sweater
- A robotic butterfly named Nicky
Character Samples:
Sample 1: Hedwig introduces his butterfly.
Sample 2:
[The face on the network is haggard looking. Pale, shadowed eyes, barely sunken cheeks--this is not a well man.
It's hard to tell, however, because this man is smiling, rubbing a hand over his close-cropped hair, tired blue eyes sparkling as he stares somewhere off camera.
Kevin can't remember the last time he's been in the sun like this. He hasn't seen much of New Dodge, but none of the Others have told him about a beach like this--which is where he's standing, on the sand and far enough away that the boardwalk looks pretty small in the background.]
The sun's so bright. And the wind! It's...
[He trails off. His eyes fill with visible tears, because he suddenly feels so alone and wants nothing more than to have Elle or Courtney to share this with.
Still...]
...it's not so bad, bein' in the Light...
